SOAR Board Member Don Kieffer recently received this letter from New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio (54th District).
Dear Don:
Since the very day the so called SAFE Act was enacted, I have been an outspoken critic of this law. My steadfast commitment to protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding, legal gun owners was the reason I opposed and voted against the Governor’s strict gun control legislation.
The Governor’s SAFE Act violates the freedoms of law-abiding gun owners and it does not provide real solutions to the problem of criminals who use guns to commit violent crimes in our community. Please know that your comments, along with thousands of others, have strengthened my resolve to do everything possible to repeal this ill-conceived measure.
You and I know that responsible, law-abiding gun owners are not the cause of the problem, and that they should not be penalized. The focus should be on commonsense measures to increase the penalties for people who use guns to commit crimes and on legislation to strengthen New York’s mental health system and criminal justice laws.
That is why I am leading the fight against Governor Cuomo’s strict gun control law and have introduced legislation that would REPEAL the so-called SAFE Act. My legislation, Senate Bill 5626, would repeal the SAFE Act, while keeping the provision which mandates life in prison, without parole for anyone who murders an emergency responder. Enclosed, please find a copy of this measure for your information and review.
New York’s law-abiding gun owners need to join together to fight this misguided law. Your support of my legislation to repeal the SAFE Act is critical and will help strengthen our efforts to give back New Yorker’s their constitutional Second Amendment rights! Please visit my website at http://www.nysenate.gov/senator/michael-f-nozzolio to sign my petition repealing the SAFE Act.
Be assured that I will continue to stand up for your Second Amendment right that are the foundation of our freedom as Americans.
If I can be of assistance to you or your family, I hope you will not hesitate to let me know.
With best wishes.
Sincerely,
Mike Nozzolio
Senator, 54th District
